How did you meet?

I was a singer in the high school youth group as a junior in high school, and Jake was a freshman in college who was going to help out by leading the band. He walked in and I was a little smitten, but we didn’t really connect much and he eventually stopped helping with that youth group so we didn’t see each other for a few years. The second semester of my freshman year of college, we joined the same bible study and slowly became friends, and Jake started making some pretty unsubtle moves… and I fell for all of them.

How did he pop the question?

On a trip visiting some friends in Seattle, we went to the zoo which was so meaningful to me because of my very long, very obstacle-ridden journey to becoming a zookeeper. While I was totally nerding out over the enclosures and animal care, Jake was choosing the perfect animal to include in our moment. After his first choice fell through (giraffes, because he is my 6’6” giraffe!) he picked grizzly bears because of my history of living in Alaska and general love for those amazing and adorable animals. It may also have something to do with my professional bear-like napping skills… It was all absolutely perfect.

Was the proposal a surprise?

I suspected that he would propose on our trip because it matched up with the timeline we had discussed and it’s so beautiful, the perfect setting for a special moment! However, the guy kept psyching me out until I was convinced I was crazy and he wasn’t going to do it there. So of course that’s when he proposed.

For our 2 year anniversary, we started out the day at the mall – one of my gifts was some Cardinals gear for the game we were going to! We went to lunch at one of our favorite downtown spots and headed to the game (which I think we won…?). Afterward, we were walking to the car afterward when we got stuck in this freak windstorm, made worse by the fact that these downtown buildings had created this wind tunnel that we were fighting against. Eventually we made it to the car and got to dinner, and changed into nicer clothes in the bathroom. However changing into nicer clothes did not, in fact, make us look nicer due to the debris everywhere, hair a mess, sunburnt only on my lower arms (because I chose a quarter sleeve shirt)… but there was nothing but laughter that day.

When did you know he/she was the one?

I think I knew when we celebrated 6 months together, and my mom and I started to make a quilt for our 1st anniversary. I knew that I wanted to be with him for another 6 months, and for forever after that.

What is your favorite thing about your fiancé?

Jake is the most generous and caring person I have ever met. He has never once passed on an opportunity to help and be supportive to me or anyone else who needs it.

How do you envision your wedding day?

All that I want is for it to be a day that our friends and family can enjoy as much as we do! I want there to be eating, drinking, dancing, and laughing the whole night through.

How did you decide on your venue?

We toured a few locations and the Third Degree Glass Factory stood out as not only the most unique (a glass-blowing demonstration during cocktail hour!!) but also the easiest to work with. So far they haven’t failed to show the lengths they’ll go to make our day really special.

Are there any special or family traditions you’ll be incorporating?

Our unity ceremony will be one in which we plant a seed in some soil, and both of our sets of parents will include soil from the places that we grew up. (How awesome is that??)

In lieu of a guestbook, we will have our guests sign quilt blocks. Quilts are a hobby of my mom’s, and we’ve done several together, so it was definitely something I wanted to incorporate.

What are you looking forward to most about your wedding day?

I’m most looking forward to this day closing our 3 years of long distance. Starting on May 26th, we get to spend every weekend and every weekday together! We are so excited.

Aaron & Megan: Engaged

Aaron & Megan have been together for four years and they’re making it forever in a month! Megan reached out to us not too long ago and we fell in love with her vision (and her) immediately. It’s going to be a busy and beautiful weekend for our AEE family! We can’t wait to celebrate these two and their love on May 27th. See below for their fun and colorful engagement photos and a little bit more about their story!

How did you meet?

We met on an online dating app.  I was a senior at WashU applying to medical school and Aaron was a young professional in St. Louis.  Our first date was at Kayaks coffee, which is also where we went right before we got engaged!

We really enjoy trying new restaurants and food experiences. We did a cooking class early in the year and it was a lot of fun to use a sous vide and salt block (which both ended up on our registry).  Another fun date we have been on recently is going to a hole-in-the wall taco place in Detroit (which Megan admits she wasn’t super sure about) and then an awesome tiki bar.

When did you know he/she was the one?

Megan: When I realized I couldn’t move to Ann Arbor without him!

How did he pop the question?

He popped the question during Thurtene Weekend at WashU in Brookings Quad which is the picturesque entrance to the University.  We then went to dinner and my parents and sister had come from Chicago to surprise me and celebrate!

Was the proposal a surprise?

Kind of, I knew that it was coming, but he faked me out a few times!

What is your favorite thing about your fiancé?

He is able to make me laugh every day.  There is never a dull moment.

How do you envision your wedding day?

We want to be a party!  We have many unique groups of people coming to our wedding and we hope they all mix and have a great time!

How did you decide on your venue?

We made it a family affair and our parents went along with Aaron to tour venues.  Megan was on a one-month “sub-internship,” which is essentially a one month job interview, and didn’t see the Coronado until they signed the contract.

IMG_6686

Are there any special or family traditions you’ll be incorporating?

Megan’s grandma is making her put a coin in her shoe, which is an Irish tradition for good luck.

What are you looking forward to most about your wedding day?

Seeing everyone we love and having a great time with each other!

Frank & Jennifer: Engaged

Jen & Frank are two of the most caring individuals I’ve met. Jen is superbly organized and has made planning this wedding a breeze! How did you meet?

We met during our second year of law school at Marquette University Law School. Frank would say that we met in Professor Papke’s American Legal History Class, and Jen would say that we met during the Jenkins Honors Moot Court Competition. Regardless, we really became good friends our last year of law school, realized we liked each other, and started dating right before graduation.

How long have you been together?

When Frank propose in April, we had been together for just over 2 years. When we get married in May 2018, it will be a little over 3 years!

Share one of your favorite dates.

There are so many favorite dates. One of our first dates was a walk around Lake Michigan with my dog Chessie. Chess can be a little skiddish, but Frank didn’t know that at the time. He playfully jumped out to greet her but actually scared her. She refused to walk near him or let him pet her the rest of the night. They are best friends now! Frank’s favorite date was probably his surprise 30th birthday. Jen surprised Frank with tickets to the UW v. LSU game at Lambeau field. To everyone’s surprise, the Badgers won! It was a perfect day.

When did you know he/she was the one?

Jen: I knew Frank was the one when we took our first trip together up North. There isn’t too much to do up there, so we spent a lot of time talking, watching movies, paddling around the lake, and visiting places like Lake Superior. All the quiet time together helped me see just how kind, genuine, humble, and generous Frank is.

Frank: When I saw how kindly and lovingly she treated her dog, Chessie.

How did he pop the question?

Oh this is a long story. Poor Frank was so nervous. The short version of it is that Frank tricked Jen into going to the Arboretum, where he got down on one knee and asked, “will you marry me.” It was very sweet.

Was the proposal a surprise?

It was a major surprise. First, it was a Tuesday. Second, it was tax day. Third, Jen was leaving town that weekend. Fourth, we hadn’t talked about or looked at rings together. When Frank started acting a little funny though, Jen though it might be happening (but talked herself out of it because of the above four points).

What is your favorite thing about your fiancé?

Jen: Frank sees the best in everything. Frank helps me try to see things in a more positive and upbeat way.

Frank: She cares about everything, including making sure I’m as good of a person as I can be. She makes me better.

How do you envision your wedding day?

We want the day to be romantic and fun. We cannot wait to dance with everyone. We hired one of the best DJ’s and he’s going to be making it a real party!

How did you decide on your venue?

The McPherson is just so beautiful. Just look at those beams. The hall is gorgeous. We love the woodwork, the stained glass windows, and the patio. It’s perfect.

Are there any special or family traditions you’ll be incorporating?

We’re Catholic, so we’ll be celebrating mass. We are also serving two Wisconsin Beers (a his and hers beer) Summershandy and Hoppalicious as a nod to our Wisconsin family and friends. Finally, we are having pain au chocolate instead of cake because we used to get pain au chocolate on Sundays at a small bakery in Milwaukee. It’s our special treat.

What are you looking forward to most about your wedding day?

We can’t wait to have all of our friends and family together in one place. It’s going to be a terrific night of food, fun, and dancing.

Ryan & Laura: Engaged

Laura & Ryan are tying the knot at the Saint Louis Zoo in May and we are excited to be surrounded by love (and be so close to polar bears). They just celebrated eight years together in January and their forever together is fast approaching! Keep scrolling to see their engagement photos and read more about their love story.

Version 2

How did you meet?

We went to the same high school, but neither of us actually remember meeting! By our senior year, though, we were part of the same social circles.

On my birthday the first year we were together, Ryan and I went to a pet store to play with puppies. The corgi we played with was adorable, and I still remember how sharp his little teeth were, but it was such a fun and memorable day.

Shay_Piantanida_Engagement_3

When did you know he/she was the one?
I was pretty sure once we started to keep a list of names for our future dogs together, and then was certain when we adopted our dog Tamale a couple of years ago.

How did he pop the question?
Last March we spontaneously booked cheap flights to Paris for Ryan’s spring break. On our last night in Paris, after dinner and a rainy stroll through the Île de la Cité, we ended up outside of Notre Dame Cathedral, where Ryan proposed.

Was the proposal a surprise?
Yes and no! We had picked out a ring together about six months before our trip, so I suspected he would propose in Paris once we booked the tickets. However, since he waited until late the last night of our trip, I was starting to think he wasn’t going to do it! It was a brilliant move on his part–instead of having the post-vacation blues when we got back home, I was on Cloud 9.

Version 2

What is your favorite thing about your fiancé?
I’ve never had to pretend to be someone I’m not around Ryan. I am able to be my silly self and we always have fun together. He’s my best friend, who I just happen to be in love with.

How do you envision your wedding day?
We envision our wedding to be romantic and elegant, with a healthy dose of whimsy. We would like our wedding day to be fancy, but not stuffy!

How did you decide on your venue?
I’ve been going to the Saint Louis Zoo since I was a kid, and Ryan and I have visited together a few times, too. Since we both love animals and wanted a unique venue, it was an easy decision.

Shay_Piantanida_Engagement_1

Are there any special or family traditions you’ll be incorporating?
As my “something old,” I have a vintage handkerchief embroidered with the name of my maternal grandma, Marilyn, who sadly passed away before I was born. I was given my middle name in her honor, and she and my grandpa actually got married on the same day of our wedding: May 19th.

What are you looking forward to most about your wedding day?
We can’t wait to have all of our closest friends and family together in the same place at the same time!
