Jake & Lea are getting ready to tie the knot and we are so excited! We have had the pleasure of being part of this family since Jake’s sister got married last May. They are getting ready to celebrate their four-year anniversary and are just the sweetest, most fun-loving couples! How did you meet?
I was a singer in the high school youth group as a junior in high school, and Jake was a freshman in college who was going to help out by leading the band. He walked in and I was a little smitten, but we didn’t really connect much and he eventually stopped helping with that youth group so we didn’t see each other for a few years. The second semester of my freshman year of college, we joined the same bible study and slowly became friends, and Jake started making some pretty unsubtle moves… and I fell for all of them.
How did he pop the question?
On a trip visiting some friends in Seattle, we went to the zoo which was so meaningful to me because of my very long, very obstacle-ridden journey to becoming a zookeeper. While I was totally nerding out over the enclosures and animal care, Jake was choosing the perfect animal to include in our moment. After his first choice fell through (giraffes, because he is my 6’6” giraffe!) he picked grizzly bears because of my history of living in Alaska and general love for those amazing and adorable animals. It may also have something to do with my professional bear-like napping skills… It was all absolutely perfect.
Was the proposal a surprise?
I suspected that he would propose on our trip because it matched up with the timeline we had discussed and it’s so beautiful, the perfect setting for a special moment! However, the guy kept psyching me out until I was convinced I was crazy and he wasn’t going to do it there. So of course that’s when he proposed.
Share one of your favorite dates.
For our 2 year anniversary, we started out the day at the mall – one of my gifts was some Cardinals gear for the game we were going to! We went to lunch at one of our favorite downtown spots and headed to the game (which I think we won…?). Afterward, we were walking to the car afterward when we got stuck in this freak windstorm, made worse by the fact that these downtown buildings had created this wind tunnel that we were fighting against. Eventually we made it to the car and got to dinner, and changed into nicer clothes in the bathroom. However changing into nicer clothes did not, in fact, make us look nicer due to the debris everywhere, hair a mess, sunburnt only on my lower arms (because I chose a quarter sleeve shirt)… but there was nothing but laughter that day.
When did you know he/she was the one?
I think I knew when we celebrated 6 months together, and my mom and I started to make a quilt for our 1st anniversary. I knew that I wanted to be with him for another 6 months, and for forever after that.
What is your favorite thing about your fiancé?
Jake is the most generous and caring person I have ever met. He has never once passed on an opportunity to help and be supportive to me or anyone else who needs it.
How do you envision your wedding day?
All that I want is for it to be a day that our friends and family can enjoy as much as we do! I want there to be eating, drinking, dancing, and laughing the whole night through.
How did you decide on your venue?
We toured a few locations and the Third Degree Glass Factory stood out as not only the most unique (a glass-blowing demonstration during cocktail hour!!) but also the easiest to work with. So far they haven’t failed to show the lengths they’ll go to make our day really special.
Are there any special or family traditions you’ll be incorporating?
Our unity ceremony will be one in which we plant a seed in some soil, and both of our sets of parents will include soil from the places that we grew up. (How awesome is that??)
In lieu of a guestbook, we will have our guests sign quilt blocks. Quilts are a hobby of my mom’s, and we’ve done several together, so it was definitely something I wanted to incorporate.
What are you looking forward to most about your wedding day?
I’m most looking forward to this day closing our 3 years of long distance. Starting on May 26th, we get to spend every weekend and every weekday together! We are so excited.
Stay tuned for sneak peeks of their wedding day!
