Joe & Kathy: Engaged

Kathy & Joe met in June of 2013 and went on their first date that July. I’ll save you from doing the math…they’ve now been together for four years and they can’t wait to share their special day with friends and family!

How did you meet your fiancé?

We met floating down the Huzzah river at our fraternity’s annual float trip. We both went to St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP) and joined the same co-ed fraternity Kappa Psi, but at different times. We never crossed paths on campus or at other fraternity events, even though we had many mutual friends. On the float trip we had a cooler mix up that lead to conversations, laughs, and later a Facebook friend request. Shortly returning back to St. Louis we went on our first date to Dominic’s on the Hill and a Josh Turner concert at Soldier’s Memorial. The rest is history!

When did you know they were the one for you?

I knew that Joe was the one after the first time we visited his family in Kentucky. We were dating a little over a year when I made my first weekend trip to stay with his parents. They live in a small town called Livermore and own a farm. After seeing Joe interacting with his family and friends and showing me around the farm, I realized I couldn’t picture a future without him.

What is one of your favorite dates you have been on?

One of my favorite dates was our first date. After the float trip I had to go back to Kirksville for two weeks to finish up a pharmacy rotation. It seemed like forever before I would be able to see Joe again, but the first weekend I was back, Joe picked me up in his red Mustang and took me to Dominic’s on the Hill. It is one of the fanciest restaurants I’ve ever been to and we laughed almost the entire dinner. We just spent the night learning more about each other. Then we went to see Josh Turner at the Soldier’s Memorial downtown. It was a perfect dinner, concert, and summer date night.

How did he propose?

Joe proposed while we were in London! We went to London with another couple Joe knew from his hometown. We rented an Airbnb that had a rooftop balcony overlooking the London Eye. Joe originally planned to propose on the night we went to see the Phantom of the Opera because we would be dressed up for the theatre; however rain was in the forecast. So he decided to push the proposal up a day after our day trip to Canterbury, Cliffs of Dover, and Leeds castle. So after a long day of sightseeing we returned to our apartment and sat on the rooftop with our friends and a bottle of wine. After some conversation about the fun we had that day, Joe asked me to take a picture with the London Eye in the background. As our friends took our picture, he got down on one knee and proposed! Later that night we face-timed our families to share the good news. Joe only told my dad about the proposal so it was fun to see everyone’s reactions.

Was it a surprise?

The proposal was a complete surprise to me! There was a thought in the back of my mind that London would be a romantic place to propose, but I thought the proposal would happen around Christmas (my favorite holiday). Little did I know that Joe asked the couple we traveled with to keep the ring in their suitcase so I wouldn’t accidentally find it (or so airport security wouldn’t ruin the surprise), and would propose with the London Eye in the background! After the proposal we video chatted with our families and a few close friends. That was when I learned that the only person that knew about the proposal was my Dad (Joe asked my Dad for his permission a few days prior to the trip). It was fun telling the rest of our families about the proposal, and seeing all of their reactions. Similarly to me, they thought it might happen on the trip, but didn’t know for sure.

What is your favorite thing about your fiancé?

My favorite thing about Joe is his ability to always make me laugh. No matter the situation, he is able to turn it around to a positive one and make me smile. He has been such a positive influence, and I can’t imagine ever being this happy without him in my life.

How do you envision your wedding day?

I envision our wedding day to be full of laughs and smiles. I hope for it to be a great time for everyone involved in the wedding and the guests. Looking back I hope to remember all of the fun we had with both families. This will be the first time most of our extended families will be meeting each other and I envision it to be a big celebration.

How did you decide on your venue?

We decided on St. John Nepomuk for our ceremony location because I have a family connection with the Church. My grandma was a member of the Church and my great grandparents were married there. My grandma has passed away, but getting married at St. John Nepomuk will be a special connection I will be able to share with her after the wedding.

Are there any special or family traditions you’ll be incorporating?

My dad is 100% Irish and we have a family tradition that whenever someone has good news they bring a bottle of Baileys to a family gathering. We open the bottle, pass around a glass to everyone, the person with the good news says a toast, and then everyone drinks to the good news. We hope to find a time with our wedding party and parents to share a bottle of Baileys and toast to our marriage!

What are you looking forward to most about your wedding day?

The thing I look forward to most is walking down the aisle to Joe and saying our wedding vows to each other. I can’t wait to take the next step in our journey together, and spend the rest of the day celebrating with our friends and family. I also hopefully look forward to an epic dance party with our friends and family!
